You’ve seen Rose London worn before but may not have noticed it; the thing we love most about this brand is the subtlety they carry. The collection is huge, but minimal advertising is the name of the game. The brands signature logo is a discrete Rose, and although some of the tapering pieces bear the brands name, most have only an understated label at the rear accompanying the handcrafted crafted logo.

Who Started Rose London?

This is an intentional theme from the four mates who started Rose London Clothing in Gwent, Wales in 2014. They wanted to create a brand that they were proud to wear, and they’ve pulled that off with aplomb. James Povey, Dafydd Mallett, Daniel Ronan, and Shane Harris set up MrSister Clothing and rebranded as Rose London to launch their AW14 collection.

Who owns Rose London now?

Rose London Limited went into administration in 2017, and the assets were picked up by Nigel Addison and Nicholas Preston who continued the brand.

I first came across Rose London when I originally wrote this article in August 2016 to cover the launch of their AW16 collection and it was impressive at the time. Below is my original article:

Rose London Logo

Every garment is made from high-quality material, and is not only easily combinable but can be worn on any occasion. It epitomises the idea of a wardrobe that is easily combinable and is stylish enough to be worn in the day or evening.

You could rock up to the beach, pub or restaurant and not look out of place. A lot of brands try this, but this is the first time we’ve seen it accomplished on every item. With the help of top fashion designers, they have really turned out an SS16 and AW16 Collection of the highest quality, expertly modelled by Max Hamilton.

Summer Wear

Often in fashion simplicity is mistaken for boring and for not standing out from the legion of brands available. We completely disagree and would describe the brand as beautifully understated, with some lovely pastel colours. We love the style and design of the T-Shirts, with the marble effect tee a standout piece of the collection.

The Titus tee comes in a variety of colours, including White, Black, Sage, Camel and Pink. Their Castello jacket has a lovely old school retro quality about it, and the matching black Jogger sets are intentionally designed to be completely interchangeable with every colour tee in the range. Every item has been meticulously covered until every detail has been perfected. This Brand truly wants nothing but quality and the results show.

There is a huge range of polo’s, patterned vests and shorts to choose from too, again with the shorts to compliment all tees and vests. Our favourite is the Huxley with palm tree design just invokes the memory of sitting on the promenade of Ibiza Old Town, the smell of coffee and cigarettes filling our noses as we caught up with the boys behind Rose London.

They told us of their pride in the collection and it’s growing success as some of the biggest urbanwear retailers like Thomas Gun have picked up their collection for their website and stores. Unwittingly proving the designed clothes they would wear, they were genuinely all wearing their favourites of the collection, and you could see them beaming at every compliment they picked up from passerby’s.

And for good reason, these are lovely looking garments that genuinely are eye-catching. With the passion these lads have, it’s hard not to predict big things for Rose London as they combine style and quality. Exactly how it should be.

Rose London Tees

Autumn Wear

To help prepare for the impending cold weather, check out their range of sweatshirts and hoodies which again are understated but carry a certain level of class. We’re big fans of the signature grey marl jumper with the huge Rose logo, which looks just class with black jeans.

Of course no brand can escape the attentions of the well-dressed young man about town. Gym King model Alex ‘Ab’ Bowen is no different and was captured wearing Rose London’s lovely drop-shoulder tee as he left Love Island recently.

We often talk about the importance of building a brand. But what happens when you don’t feel your initial branding is right and actually stifling growth? Rebranding can just be removing the shackles of a negative stigma, like for example Stella Artois and Burberry. Once both common in a Friday night brawl in a kebab shop, Stella has worked hard to replace the “wife-beater” tag with “Reassuringly expensive”. Burberry was even banned in pubs and clubs at one point, but now has brand ambassadors like Emma Watson and Cara Delevingne and has successfully used social media to turn the image around. They also crucially bought back the 23 licenses allowing other business to use it’s pattern, and regained control.

Some Brands were calling out to be renamed, Isis Belgian Chocolates and Ayds Candy for example. But some of the biggest brands realised early on that a new name was needed to move them forward. I mean would you drink a cold Brad’s Drink (Pepsi), Backrub (Google) it, or buy something from AuctionWeb (EBay)? Or how about listening to your Sound Around (Walkman), playing on your Marafuku (Nintendo) or cooking in your Radar Oven (Microwave).

backrub

In fashion, brand is king, and battling for the throne is Blue Ribbon Sports. Sound appealing? What about if I called them Nike? Another athletics streetwear brand looking for a similar change in fortunes is Avid & Co, formally known as Avid Attire. We asked Streetwear Designers and Marketing Experts Fashion Design Solutions on why they had made this bold move.

“”It’s harder than ever for Urban Wear brands to stand out from the crowd these days. Despite heavily investing in Social Media and advertising, sometimes a change is needed. Especially for brands like Scar Tissue Clothing who are finding out from the big retailers the hard way, that having a brilliant product is not enough. Name does matter, and the big retailers will take Brand into consideration. 304# have recently rebranded as 304 and it’s a bold move, as all of the old stock becomes redundant, and website domains & social media accounts all need to be changed.”

“Avid have done things the right way by changing their whole image, becoming a higher-end product and stepping away from the bold branding. Gone are the 6 inch emblazoned branding and in has come subtle branding on items. They have gone from being able to see the brand from across the street to literally looking close all over to see who made it. Which is genius, as you then can instantly see and feel the quality. Some may consider the move to high-end brave, but it is inspired as they are now one of the best brands on the market. The new name is the next chapter in Avid history books, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.”

Avid & Co

And who are we to argue with the Fashion House that made the phenomenon that is Sik Silk and 11 Degrees? We can’t help but agree that Avid’s brave move has paid off, but only time will tell. What we do know here is quality clothes, and Avid & Co are starting to stand out for the right reasons.

Who are Intense Menswear?

Established in 2012, Intense Menswear was formed by Liam France in his home town of Stockport. From humble beginnings as a shop, in addition to its flagship stores it has expanded as Intense Clothing and now branched out into collections for women and kids. The brand’s inspiration has always been to create products which reflect the times and attitude of today’s modern city-dweller. Intense aim to incorporate the style of the city into a mix of attitude and popular culture, reaching people with their brand and philosophy. With its recognisable Spider Logo, their printed T-Shirts, Polo Shirts, Hoodies, Joggers, Vests, Sweatshirts and Shorts are all designed to inspire.

We have to admit these are some nice clothes, and we had a close look at the Black Widow Hoodie to check out it’s quality. It is on the pricey side, currently the cheapest available for £54.99, but the thickness of the 100% cotton just shows this is built to last. Yes you can buy a black hoodie at Primark for £14, but I guarantee the Intense one will keep you warmer and last ten times as long. Like most modern streetwear, the joggers are tight-fitting on the calves which isn’t my thing, but the hoodie is a welcome addition to any wardrobe.

Which celebs are wearing Intense Clothing?

It seems these days you have to gauge a brands popularity by who is wearing it. Of course for any urban wear brand, reality TV culture is the holy grail of celeb endorsement. Intense’s Instagram is a variety of who’s who of current TV stars. Scotty T of Geordie Shore is a big advocate of the brand, and was wearing it daily on his summer appearance on ITV’s Love Island.

Tommy Mallet, Marco Falcone and Chris Clark of The Only Way is Essex are also big fans and have been captured wearing the brand.

And of course, there is plenty of endorsement from the likes of Katie Price, Jemma Lucy (ex on the beach), Lauren Rose, Ali Drew and Ash Defty.

Who are Profit X Loss?

Also known as PXL, Profit X Loss are a UK based Urban Clothing Brand, making waves in America. Seen on such celebrity heavyweights as 50 Cent in his ‘9 Shots’ Video, they are turning heads for the right reasons. The Hip-Hop and street influences are clear, and this street-wear brand is dedicated to making quality products for their customer base to enjoy and their determination to succeed is clear. Co-founder Dacre Bracy is a self-confessed obsessive fan of street and youth culture, heavily influenced by music and a dream. Inspired to make authentic clothing to the highest standards, always casual enough to wear on the street, but of course sharp enough to wear in a club. As a Brand, their hats, tees, sweats and joggers are bold, bright and beautiful. Just looking at them invokes a flashback to my teenage years listening to The Chronic.

50 Cent Profit x Loss

First and foremost for any new brand in the crowded urban wear market, there has to be good product to stand out. Profit X Loss certainly seem to have that for what we have seen.

We peaked at Street Wear specialists and stockist Thomas Gun for what they thought of the collection, and they seem impressed with more than the clothes. They reference the brand’s obvious knowledge and passion in what they do, with a clear attention to detail on every product. For them the stand-out indicator was the detailed product descriptions on the official website and that they clearly had not compromised on the quality of the materials. And you have to agree with the experts, these are clear signals on a brand heavily involved in the production of their garment.

What are peak panel caps?

Profit X Loss caps are different to most. First off, they use leather strapbacks instead of the more popular snapbacks, but they also detail a lot of their hats as Pinch Peak.

Baseball caps come in a variety of styles, and now colloquially called Snapbacks after the fastener at the back. Originating in 1860 as part of a baseball team uniform to keep the sun out of eyes, it modernised in the 1940’s more in keeping with its appearance now. In the 60’s they became common as local merchandising promotional giveaways, often for automobile companies, giving the name Trucker hats for the style with the mesh.

You can actually blame Tom Selleck for their exploding popularity, with his 80’s Magnum P.I character the first sex symbol to wear it and many copied. In the 90’s everyone saw the opportunity to use it for promotional reasons, and it became a big part of popular pop culture. The association with Hip-Hop really started here, with it often being worn backwards.

Before I start rambling about Kris Kross’s backwards jeans, let’s break them down. Ultimately it comes down to constructed hats with the buckram button holding it together, or the unconstructed ‘floppy’ caps. Then you have the bill or peak, which is either a hip-hop style flat or a curved ‘dad’ hat. But here are some terms you may have heard that might be easier to explain.

Snapbacks

Named after the plastic adjustable strap where it snaps into place to lock it in the chosen place. To make things confusing, this can be on a range of hats including trucker and baseball, so the term is based on the adjuster rather than the type of hat.

Strapbacks

As above but using a strap made of plastic or leather and a tightener, usually a metal bar through a hole technique. PXL favour a PU Leather strap.

Trucker

Usually made of mesh and foam rather than cotton so more breathable by nature, these are more suited to outdoors and sport. The top brand in Truckers these days is Fresh Ego Kid.

Fresh Ego Kid Trucker

5 Panel

Straight out of New York and the skater parks, and adapted for fashionistas. The five panels consist of two top panels, two side panels and a front panel (or 2 on the 6 panel). Usually made with cotton twill, these are literally panels sewn up and held together by the button. These are the common snapback method, so a peak panel is literally a panel hat like this, with a peak.

Dad Hat

A favourite of ours as we prefer the curved peak, this is an old school hat that is practical as well as stylish. Perhaps more favoured by the older generation which still laments after it’s missing youth, it’s a classic style that will never go out of fashion.

Flat Peak

Hip-Hip style flat peak rather than curved. This can be carefully manipulated to curve as required and usually consisting of plastic or cardboard to stiffen or in the case of PXL PU Leather (leather coated with a layer of polyurethane) which is harder to bend. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as shows it will keep its shape for many years to come.

Every now and again a new urban wear brand comes along to blow us away with it’s originality, style and damn-right coolness. Not since Chptr and Vrse have we been as blown away as when we first saw Scar Tissue Clothing recently.

The Brighton-based Brand’s first collection was an early AW16 launch that is currently taking the streets by storm. While designed for Men in mind, the clothes have already proven to be a hit with ladies too. And when you see these sizzling shots you instantly know why. This is a brand not ashamed to use sex appeal for sales, and the photoshoots and models are still classy.

Who are Scar Tissue Clothing?

Well they are the brain-child of a Brighton devout follower of fashion. After becoming tired with the market, he wanted to design his own clothes and had some good ideas. Importantly he also had the Clothing brand’s distinctive Seed of Life Logo bouncing round his head, and the vision was complete.

Step forward Sussex-based Fashion Design Solutions to put the dream into reality, and with everything they touch comes another gold mine of clothing perfection. Every item is of the expected highest quality, and completely bang on trend. Beating every major brand to the punch, they launched the AW16 well before others hit stores which shows this companies determination to be a market leader.

Where have I seen that Logo before?

The brand use the distinctive Seed of Life logo on their clothes, also known as the flower of life, which represents the seven stages, steps, or days of creation. In fashion there are seven stages to making the clothes, but ultimately despite it’s connotations the logo was chosen as the brand thought it looked cool and worthy of the clothes quality. It’s also the same for those mirror image selfies.

AW16 Collection

The AW16 Collection includes T-Shirts, Hoodies, Joggers, Polo Shirts, Sweatshirts, Shorts, Snapbacks, and a full Gym Range. They have put their Lookbook video online to showcase the full collection and the quality is instantly standout.

T-Shirts

Scar Tissue T-Shirts are all made of the finest high-quality cotton and come in a variety of styles including Vented, Curved Hem, and Oversized tees. Using colouring techniques such as Dip-Dye, Oil-Dye, and Mouliné strands, the range is beautifully varied and it’s impossible to pick a favourite. Colours include White, Black, Almond, Khaki, Maroon, Black Olive, Grey and Charcoal. We love the Grey and Coffee Dip Dyes but the Stripe Tee’s modelled below are a work of art.

Scar Tissue AW16

Hoodies and Sweatshirts

No AW16 collection would be complete without something that could keep you warm and still be cool as fuck. Scar Tissue Hoodies and Sweatshirts fill that need with innovation, with the zip hoodies offering dual direction for perfect climate control.

With a brilliant material of a Polyester, Cotton and Viscose, the zip hoodies are stylish and practical. The pullover hoodies are equally as nice, and of course all offer drawstrings to keep that chill out. Best of all they all have matching joggers, so all needs are met. And we love the Black Olive, Maroon and Charcoal colour scheme.

Scar Tissue Hoodies

Joggers

If you are lazing about the house you want comfort. If you are out and about, you want style. So the perfect joggers will always need to combine these basic needs. It should not be that difficult but often is not done due to design faults or manufacturing restrictions. So what a relief to find these tracksuit bottoms are just perfect and match the hoodies, sweats and tees as well. This is what we love about this brand, they refuse to sacrifice on quality.

Scar Tissue AW16

Gym Wear

To tackle a Gym range in a first collection is a brave move, and to vary it from the main range is daring to say the list. Still keeping the Seed of Life Logo, the Gym Wear has a smaller version but has the brand name emblazoned on the rear. This is a bold effort from a brand who’s main range is refreshingly clean from advertising. Frankly, it all depends if you like having Scar Tissue on your arse as you do squats, but I think we can all agree Jemma Lucy can pull it off.

Scar Tissue Gymwear

Who is wearing it?

It seems Clothing Brands are defined by who is wearing, promoting and endorsing them on social media. We probably saw too much of DJ Darryl Williams on Channel 4’s Naked Attraction, but this man has hardly been seen in anything else since joining the photo shoot that included Ex On The Beach’s Jemma Lucy, and urbanwear models Paul Hutchinson and Dan Ford. The brands rise is evident as has been seen on the backs of reality stars Stephen Bear, Jason Burrill, Jackson Blyton and beyond.

Where can you buy Scar Tissue Clothing?

A lot of major retailers are in discussions, but Thomas Gun are always quick of the mark when it comes to spotting trends and were the first retailer to take them up and the range is available here. There are also outlets dotted around Sussex and beyond which can be found on the brands Stockists page.
